THE SAP SEMANTIC MODEL · FOR COMPANIES ON SAP ECC AND S/4HANA

SAP is your single source of truth.
Keep it true in every report and AI answer.

Inside SAP, the numbers are right. Taken out of SAP — into a data platform, BW, Power BI or a spreadsheet — they lose the rules that make them right. We write those rules down once, as a tested semantic model you own: the foundation every report and AI answer builds on.

01 · THE PROBLEM IN ONE QUESTION

Fast answers are easy. Right ones are worth money.

SAP has the right answer. But ask the same simple question outside SAP and you get several. Only one matches SAP and the books — and it takes your one SAP expert three days to produce.

A semantic model is the foundation that fixes this: SAP’s rules, written down once and tested, so the right answer comes out everywhere — in every report, every dashboard and every AI answer.

Does this sound like you? ↓

One question. Three answers. Illustration

“What did we sell to our top customer last quarter?”

SALES DASHBOARD · FAST$4.3MCounted cancelled invoices
AI ASSISTANT · FASTER$4.5MMissed rebates kept in a custom Z-table
FINANCE CLOSE · RIGHT, BUT SLOW$4.1MMatches the books — after three days with your one SAP expert
With a semantic model: $4.1M — in every report and every AI answer. Fast and right. Defined once, tested against the close, owned by you.
02 · IS THIS FOR YOU?

Built for mid-sized companies on customized SAP.

With ECC mainstream maintenance ending in 2027 and AI on every board agenda, a semantic model of your SAP data is needed now — as the foundation for your reports, your AI and your move to S/4HANA. Which of these sounds like your SAP landscape today?

THE EXCEL EMPIRE

Export, sync, repeat.

Reports are SAP downloads stitched together in Excel — and one “Excel guy” knows which lookups and macros make the numbers work.

With the semantic model: their logic written down once and tested, so the spreadsheets can retire one by one.

THE BW BACKLOG

Waiting on BW, extracting on the side.

New BW reports take months, so people pull their own extracts. And BW 7.5 mainstream maintenance ends in 2027.

With the semantic model: BW’s business logic documented, so it survives any move — and the side extracts stop.

THE DATA PLATFORM COPY

SAP in Snowflake, Fabric or Databricks.

All the data is there, and fast. But reports and AI read tables, not rules — and the numbers don’t match the close.

With the semantic model: Silver, Business Vault and Gold on top of your Bronze — SAP’s rules, applied once.

THE HYPER-CUSTOMIZED ECC

Z-tables everywhere.

Years of Z-tables, custom fields and user exits. Standard content and SAP’s own data products don’t know them.

With the semantic model: your custom logic mapped next to SAP standard — and carried to S/4HANA.

THE UNDER-USED SAP

Bought the modules, run the business elsewhere.

MRP not switched on, planning in spreadsheets or side tools. SAP holds only part of the truth — and nobody is sure which part.

With the semantic model: a clear map of where SAP’s data ends and the side tools begin — the base for switching modules on properly.

THE INTEGRATION WEB

Third-party systems in the mix.

Warehouse, CRM, e-commerce, EDI and planning tools feed and read SAP — each with its own keys and its own version of a customer or product.

With the semantic model: SAP’s keys as the backbone: one customer, one product, one order — across every system.

Most companies we meet have three or four of these at once. That’s the jungle. The semantic model untangles it: SAP’s meaning in one tested place, and every spreadsheet, report, tool and AI reads from there — today, and after the move to S/4HANA.

DO YOU WANT TO…
  • get reports and AI answers that match your books?
  • make your SAP knowledge company property, not one person’s?
  • add AI without creating another version of the truth?
  • prepare for S/4HANA with results you can use now?
  • build every report and AI tool on one tested foundation?
  • cover new warehouses, plants or company codes from day one?

Recognize your landscape? Start with your 20 questions. No fee. Register, send us 20 questions your teams ask, and we test today’s answers against your books. The result scopes your 5-day workshop. Probably not a fit: standard SAP with no custom tables, already on SAP’s own data products.

First, why this happens ↓

03 · WHY IT HAPPENS

Why SAP data gives wrong answers outside SAP.

The three answers in the example aren’t bad luck. Reports and AI built straight on SAP tables give likely answers. Wherever the data lands — a data platform, BW, Power BI or a spreadsheet — an extract falls short in three ways. The fix is the same for all three: a semantic model.

GAP 1 · NOT IN THE EXTRACT

Some answers have to be calculated in SAP.

Today’s contract price, for example, isn’t stored as one number — SAP derives it each time. An extract can’t run that logic. SAP’s own simulation (via BAPI) can, without creating a document.

GAP 2 · IN THE EXTRACT, BUT MISREAD

The data is there. Its meaning isn’t.

Cancellations, movement types, document flow, currencies: correct data still gives wrong answers when nobody has defined what it means. That’s the semantic problem.

GAP 3 · IN THE EXTRACT, BUT NOT STANDARD

Your SAP isn’t standard — and standard content doesn’t know it.

Z-tables, custom fields and configuration that departs from SAP standard are where your business really runs. Standard data products and generic models are built for standard SAP — not for yours.

Two questions SAP data can’t answer outside SAP Everyday examples
TRACKING · GAPS 2 & 3

“Where is this product?”

From one warehouse to the next, and on to the customer.

Stock transport orders Deliveries Goods movements Document flow

In an extract: separate tables, with movement types nobody has decoded, links nobody has followed — and custom movement types no standard model knows.

With the semantic model: the path modeled once — one traceable flow from receipt to customer, for every warehouse, including the new one.

PRICING · GAPS 1 & 3

“What does this customer pay?”

Contract-based pricing, by customer and product — today.

Condition tables Pricing procedure Scales Validity dates

In an extract: past invoices carry their prices. Today’s contract price doesn’t exist as one number — SAP derives it from condition records, scales and custom routines. The extract has the ingredients, not the recipe.

With the semantic model: today’s prices calculated by SAP’s own pricing simulation — no documents created — and tested against real invoices.

What these wrong answers cost ↓

04 · WHAT IT COSTS

What wrong answers cost — measured in nines, like uptime.

Each of those gaps produces wrong answers. No IT team would accept 98% uptime — the same percentages applied to SAP answers show where the money is, and where the budget for fixing it comes from.

What “only 2% wrong” means Illustrative mid-sized company: $300M revenue, $45M inventory, 600 AI-assisted decisions a month

99.9% · three nines0.6$600
99.99% · four nines0.06$60
Two measures, both costly. One wrong answer can be several percent off — like the dashboard in the example at the top. And in our model, a demo on raw SAP tables, without a semantic model — ten facts per answer, each 98% right — gets about 18 in 100 answers wrong. The gap between demo level and three nines is about $1.3 million a year — roughly $440K for every $100M of revenue. Illustrative: 600 decisions a month, $5,000 at stake in each, 20% of it lost per wrong answer. Our 82% is a conservative assumption — Snowflake measured 51% for an AI model working without a semantic model.

05 · WHAT WE BUILD · THE SEMANTIC MODEL

One tested semantic model between SAP and every report.

We start from our industry best-practice models for SAP standard — the work, and the value, is in your delta. We build it in the medallion layers your data team already knows — on your data platform, or on N2ONE Core with PostgreSQL if you don’t have one. Silver and Business Vault carry SAP’s rules; Gold serves the answers. The result is your IP, and the foundation that turns AI from a guess into a tool.

Show the five issues and their sources
■

Packed tables. On classic ECC databases, pricing conditions (KONV) and accounting lines (BSEG) sit in cluster tables. Generic connectors can’t unpack them.

Fivetran docs →
■

Currency decimals. SAP stores 100 Japanese yen as 1.00. Read without SAP’s currency settings, such amounts are off by a factor of 100.

SAP Community →
■

Leading zeros and blanks. Load document numbers as numbers and joins quietly fail. Let blanks turn into NULLs and filters miss records.

Google Cloud docs →
■

Deletions. Every row needs a change flag. Miss the deletes, and records SAP has removed keep counting in your reports.

Google Cloud docs →
■

Business logic. “Simple replication of tables does not preserve calculations, validations, or conditional rules.”

STEP 2 · FOR IT & THE DATA TEAM

The Semantic Model Workshop

Five days, one department, scoped by your 20 questions. We build the core semantic model — SAP standard plus your custom Z-tables — and document it in N2ONE Core. It solves today’s need and becomes the foundation for what comes next.

  • Core semantic model for the department you choose
  • SAP standard and your custom Z-tables, mapped and documented
  • Ready to serve as the data layer for reporting and AI
  • A solid foundation for your next projects — reports, AI, new sites, S/4HANA
  • Documentation always included — and yours

What you get: a working semantic model in N2ONE Core — dynamic, so new reports and AI questions build on it instead of starting over.

Expert time: a few working sessions with your key expert — we do the documenting.

Scope: one department, up to 25 metrics, plus the custom tables they touch.

Our commitment: if the model doesn’t reconcile with your books for the agreed metrics, we keep working until it does — at no extra fee.

Yours to keep: the model and its documentation belong to you — with or without N2ONE Core. Your team can extend it without us.

Where to start: pick the department that matters most now — or the warehouse you’re opening.

Access: read-only on your data platform. In SAP: read-only, plus SAP’s own simulations (such as pricing) that create no documents.

$8,0005 days · fixed fee · one department After that: further departments at a fixed fee each, agreed up front.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions we hear.

Short answers to what comes up in the first meeting.

Back to the two steps
SAP is automating this.Good — for standard SAP. Your Z-tables and custom configuration are the gap standard content doesn’t cover. And someone independent should still check the answers against your books.
We already have a data platform.Keep it — that’s your Bronze. We add the semantic model on top: Silver, Business Vault and Gold, carrying SAP’s meaning.
We don’t have a data platform. Then we start where your SAP data lives today — BW, extracts or spreadsheets — and N2ONE Core on PostgreSQL holds the semantic model.
We’re moving off SAP BW.BW holds years of business logic. We document it as a semantic model first, so it survives the move — to Datasphere, Business Data Cloud or any platform.
Our team can do this. Then we make them faster — start with our free SAP Data Model Library for the standard part. The hard part isn’t the tool — it’s knowing where SAP hides its rules in your delta.
Our SAP knowledge is in one person’s spreadsheet. That’s the best starting point. We turn it into a tested model your whole team — and your S/4 project — can use.
We’re moving to S/4 anyway. Then this is your head start. KONV becomes PRCD_ELEMENTS, MSEG becomes MATDOC, customers become Business Partners — but your business rules stay. A documented model is your mapping and your test basis.
Won’t we just depend on you instead? No. The model and its documentation are yours — you keep them with or without N2ONE Core. The point is that nobody is the only one who knows.
Sounds big.Start with 20 questions, at no fee. Then five days, one department, $8,000 — below most approval limits. You decide what comes next.
Data can’t leave. Then everything runs on your own servers, including the AI model.
